Interactive games

Disclaimer:

When creating these games, we did a lot of research on German and European colonization, exact maps and dates, etc. Especially with anti-queer laws in former German colonies, like trying to find texts of these laws, what they criminalized, what terminology they used and so on, we noticed a huge archivial and research gap and were shocked at how little information and documents are available. We acknowledge that what we present here therefore has gaps. If you have more resources or information on this research topic, please let us know and let's create more and better knowledge together! Also, if you spot any mistakes or want to share feedback, we are happy to hear from you.

We created these materials for a stand at "10 years O-Platz" in Berlin and have been updating them for different occasions since. The interactive game has 4 parts / stations with a different focus each. For each station there are print-outs (= templates for the interactive part) and hand-outs (= summaries that people can take with them).

Station 1: German colonies

Print out the big empty map and attach it to a pinboard (or similar). You need pins that have the names (and if you like, time periods) of the former German colonies attached to them. Then everyone can put the pin where they think they belong on the map. The hand-out lists all places and shows the correct answers.

Station 2: Refugees and European colonialism

Print out the big empty chart. People are supposed to add their guess on that paper, e.g. with stickers, a marker, or any other creative way. The handout has a list of the numbers of forcibly displaced people today, and shows which European power(s) colonized (part of) what is their countries of origin today.

Station 3: European colonialism and anti-queerness

The printout is a template for trivia/quiz cards. You will need to print it out two-sided on A4 and then cut along the lines. The handout contains the facts that are used in the quiz cards.

Station 4: Queer resistance today

The pages from the print-out can be put up in the space or laid down on a table. The handout is a list of the orgs we featured.
